Karbonn introduced their latest in the Titanium series- Karbonn Titanium S9 with the USP of a huge 5.5″ display. It looks very similar to the Samsung Galaxy Mega which comes with a little larger display.

I guess someone at Karbonn Mobiles was very patriotic to build up the Indian version of the flop Galaxy Mega. Check out the following Karbonn Titanium S9 review to know if its a hit or a flop.

User Experience

i. Design: Like Samsung Galaxy

First Impression: Large Screen, Galaxy like Design.

Back Panel: Glossy flimsy plastic (similar to Samsung).

Size compared with other Samsung phones_Karbonn Titanium S9

Karbonn Mobiles were very much inspired from the popular Galaxy design and the Titanium S9 got its looks similar to latest Galaxy devices. Karbonn Titanium S9 is comparable with the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8. The sides have Chrome plated bezel.

The phone feels heavier at 176.5grams. The power button is not placed far off as you index finger cannot reach it easily.

Front: Below screen- 2 capacitive buttons, 1 hardware button (home button). Above screen- proximity & light sensors, secondary camera, earpiece.

Back: Lower half- Speaker, Manufacturer Logo. Upper Half- primary camera, LED flash.

Bottom: primary mic

Top: micro USB port, audio jack.

Right: Volume Rocker. Left: Power/Lock button

.

ii. User Interface: Stock

Karbonn Titanium S9 comes with Android 4.2.2 JellyBean out of the box. Unlike Galaxy devices, the UI is not customized at all. You’ll get the taste of pure vanilla Android JellyBean.

The home screen cannot add more screens if you wish to. There are 2 Scenes & 4 Themes to be selected from. You can access notification panel from the lock screen.

.

iii. Display

S9 sports a 5.5 inch IPS display giving Natural colours on the large display. The screen looks brilliant at full brightness but it is not advised to use.

Features like auto-brightness & economic-brightness can help you save your battery. The screen takes smudges easily.

Single-handed Reach: Impossible.

.

iv. Typing: As good as the large screen

Single-handed: Portrait mode typing is very good due to adequate width of the device. Unfortunately, there is no Swipe feature out of the box.

Dual-handed: Landscape mode typing is as good as typing on a tablet-pc. You can keep the device flat on a table & use it like a desktop keyboard. But this will need a little practice to get used to it.

I really liked the Auto-correction feature in the texting part. If you are used to typing long sentences & paragraphs in English, then this feature is utmost necessary.

.

v. Browsing:

Browsing on the large 5.5” IPS screen is always amazing. The default browser renders web pages smoothly.

Pre-installed Browsers: Opera Mini, UC Browser & Android Browser.

Camera: A Blunder

Karbonn Titanium S9 has an 11.98MP (~12MP) rear camera, what the manufacturers are marketing to be a 13MP shooter. They have even mentioned it on the back panel in bold red.

Karbonn has miscalculated the camera size.

Primary cam_Karbonn Titanium S9

Primary Camera

It has the standard UI that you find in every other local phone. It misses some important functionalities like the missing zoom slider; no option to select video resolution.

S9 has 4x zoom; but unfortunately good upto 1.5x. Beyond that point, you will lose the quality. The panorama mode is average & the device misses the macro mode.

The only good thing about the camera is the HDR mode. Low-light shots & indoor shots are not upto the mark.

Front cam

Again a miscalculation?

The front is a 5MP camera which doesn’t seem to be as promised by the number. When checked out we found the front camera to be 3.7MP.

Audio-

The audio quality of the Karbonn Titanium S9 makes us very disappointed. The phone got a speaker on the lower back side. This speaker still cant work as desired, as the audio levels are very low.

.

Video-

It plays videos upto 1080p without any lags.

Final Verdict

Better than Galaxy Mega

Karbonn Titanium S9 has a Galaxy Mega-like look which could be good for those who want to buy cheaper versions of Samsung devices. The design, UI & display of the phone is very good. Even the overall performance did not disappoint us at all.

The phone disheartened us mainly with the Camera part & the audio quality is below average. If these points are of less priority for you only then you can buy Titanium S9.

  • YASHSHRI999 says:

BETTER THAN THIS PHONE IS ACER LIQUID JADE

It has a decent camera, a long-lasting standby mode and the ability to use two SIMs in one handset. In all respects of value, design, performance – the phone manages to do okay, but nothing more than that. It’s definitely Acer’s best phone yet, however, and at this kind of price level it’s perhaps unfair to complain too much about its shortcomings.
