Lava Iris 506Q was launched after the flagship from Lava- Iris 504Q (504Q being our best performer in the 10k-15k segment). Both the phones are very close in terms of design, UI & processor.

506Q is cheaper at price with few changes in the specifications & update in the design. I have some good expectations from this device. Check out the complete Lava Iris 506Q Review to find if the phone performs as expected or if it proves to be a fail.

i. Design: Better than 504Q

First Impression: Large display & beautifully designed.

Unlike Samsung, Lava paid special attention to make the design of Iris 506Q better than its sibling- Lava Iris 504Q. The top & bottom has chrome plated bezels. The rounded sides of the device makes you feel like a complete body made of single frame.

The super-slim back panel has a good looking matte finish as it won’t take smudges easily. The quality of this plastic back panel is comparable to that in Samsung’s Galaxy devices.

Plastic Back-panel is very flimsy.

After reviewing LG G2, I feel there is a lot of space wasted around the display for 506Q. The rounded edge gives good grip to the phone. The phone would easily slip into your jeans pockets.

Power button is placed on the left side but the volume rocker is placed very high on the other side, which could not be reached easily by your index finger. You will have to extend your finger.

ii. User Interface: Similar to the Rest

506Q is gives Android 4.2 JellyBean out of the box. Unfortunately, it has no custom UI very similar to 504Q.

Notification Panel could be accessed from the lock screen. You can turn of this feature from settings. You can customize the overall look of the UI by selecting from the 4 themes given. Video wallpaper feature allows you to set a video as wallpaper alike to the live wallpaper in other devices.

There are few transitions & animations but overall the UI is very smooth to operate.

iii. Display:

The 5 inches display is very sharp & crisp (comparable to 504Q). The colours are rich & give a natural feel.

The screen is not too reflective & you can easily view it on a sunny day by using the auto brightness feature. Single handed reach is not possible due to the 5 inches display.

iv. Typing:

Typing in a 5 inch display is never a problem. The keyboard is spacious & you can easily type using single hand in portrait mode. If you’re still uncomfortable then you won’t be able to find the much useful swipe feature inbuilt.

Landscape mode typing is good. The predictions works perfect & you can easily add up new word into the dictionary.

v. Browsing:

Browsing in a 5” phone can never be disappointing. Double tap zoom & pinch to zoom works as expected. The default browser misses the incognito mode. The phone is loaded with an extra browser- Opera Mini.

Lava Iris 506Q carries a 5MP rear camera clicking pictures at a resolution of 2592×1944 pixels with LED flash & auto-focus. It has 4x zoom, but image quality is good only upto 2x.

HDR images are satisfactory as you can see the difference in the image samples below. Panorama image is below average as stitching is not upto the mark.

Macro Shots upto 4cm are amazing.

The auto-focus of 506Q works brilliantly for Macro shots. I tried focusing over an object upto 4cm, it gave perfect sharp pictures. I have not seen many smartphone cameras going so deep.

The front cam is a 0.3MP which could be good for video calling but not at all good for clicking self-pictures. The picture that we clicked have washed out colours & grainy objects.

Overall, the camera quality of the device could have been much better.

Shutter Lag ~1 sec

The speaker of the device is not very loud but it is audible enough to just make you feel its presence in traffic surroundings.

The speaker is located at left bottom side at the back & this might obstruct the output when the phone is hold in right hand.

There are two music players given- Music & Fusion. The default player is equipped with all standard functions like shuffle, repeat, equaliser, playlist, etc.

Lave Iris 506Q has 2 video players out of the box- Video player & MX player. The Video player doesn’t have enough features. It pauses the video on tap (which could be irritating). It is able to play from last played location.

It can play 480p &720p videos well. For 1080p, it only plays the audio & no video.

The gallery in the device is very simple. You can use Grid view or Filmstrip view for better experience.

Notification & Ringtone-

Ringtone of the phone is loud enough. The LED indicator is present on the top below the earpiece. It will inform you about the charging status, incoming message or calls, etc.

Hardware Performance: Short of Memory

Lava Iris 506Q boasts a MediaTek MT6589 chipset powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor alongwith PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU very similar to 504Q. The 512MB RAM disappoints us as 504Q gave a better 1GB for minor price difference.

The phone is very smooth to operate when tested with some standard used apps. Playing Temple Run Oz experienced very minor lags. But the UI started showing noticeable lags after you exit from the game play.

Internal Storage: 142MB used; 866MB free.

RAM: 341MB used; 126MB free.

Restart Time: 40.08 seconds.

Benchmark Score

Nenamark 2 52.9 fps
Sunspider 0.91 1328.9 ms

Connectivity options

What it has-

  • 2G, 3G
  • Bluetooth
  • Wi-Fi with hotspot
  • GPS
  • USB 2.0
  • FM Radio

What it misses-

  • 4G
  • HDMI
  • NFC

Lava Iris 506Q adopted it’s sibling’s battery- 2000mAh; but Li-Po instead of Li-Ion. The battery might last upto a day. We couldn’t test entire battery backup properly due to unavailability of the phone at our research centre for full treatment.

Final Verdict

Built to Fail

Lava Iris 506Q (₹ 11,499) is built very close to the Lava Iris 504Q (₹ 13,799). The latter boasts a perfect combination of the processor with 1GB RAM. 506Q has inferior camera & a very poor internal storage.

The design of 506Q is appreciated over 504Q. But with the little price difference I may not advice you to go with 506Q. Iris 504Q is a much better option. If the price falls below ₹ 9,000; then you can surely go for this device.

Alternatives– Lava Iris 504Q (Better than the Rest).

. Why Should You Buy?

  • Looking to pay more than the actual value.
  • Looking for a better Design.

  • A Power User.
  • An avid Photographer.
