Xolo A500S Review: The mute performer

Xolo A500S is one of the best entry level android smartphones in the market at the moment and comes with a price tag of ₹ 6.3k approximately.

Xolo A500S

Due to its high demand Xolo has launched a newer version of it fitted with IPS display- Xolo A500S IPS. Except the difference in display technology both have same hardware inside.

I know that you are waiting for the review of the A500S IPS but you’ll have to wait for it.

We know that it is selling like a hot cake in the market but we cannot recommend it to you before we give it our full review treatment. People have been deceived by phones like Samsung Galaxy S Duos in the past as it had a very impressive spec sheet but fail to prove its worth in the real world.

Our Promise

We review phones with an obsessive focus on the experience that really matters to you. We don’t care about specifications, we will tell you what you will really feel while using the phone. And needless to say, we maintain total integrity and truthfulness in our reviews.

If you do not like Xolo smartphones, then here are some alternatives for you:

Lava Iris 458Q , Karbonn A8, Micromax Canvas Fun A74, Samsung Galaxy Star Pro and Panasonic T31.

Read this review to find out if the the A500S is really worth the hype that it has created or not.

  • Good looks
  • More than acceptable performance at the price point
  • Average display
  • Low audio level

Camera
Xolo A500S

It has a minimalistic camera UI similar to what we see in many other smartphones with very few customizations. It has separate tabs for general, photo and video settings (check screenshots).

The continuous shot can be configured to capture either 40 or 99 shots in one go.

Zoom Test

The images captured by this 5MP snapper are just okay. The colors look natural and detail are also acceptable for a phone at this price point. There is no noise cancelling program in place to keep a check on different types of noises that affect the shots taken in low-lit scenarios.

Low light samples

The quality of recorded video is also okay.

The HD video (720 @30fps) doesn’t stand up to the high-definition standards.

Here are some camera benchmarks which might come in handy:

Camera start-up time 2.07s
Shot to shot time ~1s

Audio
Xolo A500S

The low ringtone volume will make you depend upon vibration for attending calls- forget about hearing your phone ring in the traffic.

User Experience

Design

Xolo A500S

Looks stunning in blue and red colour.

The A500S is made up of rubberized plastic having a matte finish and is soft to touch. This design became so hit that it even inspired the looks of Xolo Q2000- a phablet.

Back Panel – matte finish with soft touch.

You wouldn’t be able to find minor scratches on the back-panel very easily.

One of the major drawback of this material is that it catches oil from the skin very quickly and those smudges do not go away easily.

Small size of the phone helps in providing a good grip and also makes it fit in jeans pocket easily.

User Interface

The Xolo A500S runs on the stock android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The interface was smooth and lag free most of the times and capacitive touch buttons at the bottom of the display were very responsive.

It also comes loaded with 6 different themes (see screenshots below) each having different unlocking style.

Display

The A500S is equipped with a 4 inches TFT LCD display having a resolution of 800×480 pixels which brings the pixel density count to 233 ppi.
The display is average in all aspects. It displays images with slightly dull colour representation. The sharpness is also just okay.

Single handed reach- Very easy.

Typing

Portrait mode– The typing in this mode is just doable. Nothing impressive.

Landscape mode– It becomes better than the portrait mode mainly due to larger keys and the auto correction.

Gesture/continuous/swipe input– No.

Next word suggestion– Yes.

Browsing

The browsing experience on this phone is good as we expected it to be. However it takes some time to render the web-pages.

The scrolling works just fine. Pinch-to-zoom and double tap to zoom are other standard features present to make you addicted to the web.
Pre-installed third party browsers– None

Hardware performance

The Xolo A500S is good for average users doing regular tasks like music playback, watching movies etc.

It is not designed for heavy multi-tasking and games like Temple Run Oz failed to play smoothly with high graphics settings. Even so, Subway Surfers played just fine.

BatteryXolo A500S

The Xolo A500S gets its power from a 1400 mAh Li-Ion battery which should be able to power up the smartphone for a whole day on light usage.
If you are a careless user and are habitual of forgetting to turn off WiFi and Bluetooth when not in use then Xolo Power can help you conserve a lot of battery power.

Connectivity

What is has:

  • HSPA+
  • 2G
  • GPS
  • Bluetooth v3.0
  • FM Radio
  • WiFi Direct and WiFi Hotspot
What it lacks:

  • NFC
  • HDMI

Final Verdict

Should have been louder

The Xolo A500S is an excellent choice if you do not care about the volume that its loudspeaker produces. It does the everyday tasks very well. It also supports all of the popular video formats out of the box.
It could have dominated the price segment of 6-8k INR if it were a little louder but you know, we can’t expect everything from a single phone.

  • Looking for an affordable phone capable of doing everyday tasks efficiently

  • Love gaming
  • Crazy for photography
  • Always eager to show-off your favourite music track in public

    Hi Anand,

Thanks for your review. I have 2 questions:

    1) When you say “Low Audio Level” in cons, are you talking about the speaker? Is the audio low even when you put the phone to the ear and talk on a phone call? Can you hear the other party clearly, and vice versa?

    2) What is the advantage of IPS display?

    Regards,
    Vishal

    • Anand Karwa says:

      Hi Vishal,
I think that you are talking about speaking on the phone with the loudspeaker ON. We couldn’t test the calling so we can’t say anything about it.

The main advantage of IPS displays is that it renders natural colors and also have excellent viewing angles.

      • Vishal Agrawal says:

Thanks Anand. I was talking about having a normal phone call without speaker on. In my opinion, call quality is one aspect you must review, because calling is the primary task we do on our phones. All other things are important too, but if the call quality is bad, no other features can make up for it, however great they are. Don’t you think so?

I think you should provide a review for the quality of calls – while making calls and while receiving calls on the phone being reviewed.

Just wanted you to know that I bought the phone (the IPS display version). Personally, I found the speaker to be good enough. The only problem I found so far is with the pinch-to-zoom, it’s pathetic. But that’s not a deal breaker at 6.5k 🙂

Thanks again for all your reviews and prompt responses !!

        • Anand Karwa says:

          Hi Vishal,
Yes, I agree with you. Call quality is really important. Unfortunately, we are able to check the call quality of only those phones which we receive in our office.

  • Tarun Sharma says:

    Hi Anand,

This phone looks good to me. can you tell me how good is the sound clarity in the earpieces (can you try some premium quality buds like JBL, samsung grand’s earpieces etc.) ? I read that the earpieces provided with the phone is basic (which is fine per budget) but really interested to know real potential.

    Thanks
    Tarun

  • Rakesh says:

Sir what do you mean by struggling ? Plz explain

    • Anand Karwa says:

I mean that it is erratic. Normally PTZ works in stages. The more you move your fingers away from each other the more zoom you’ll get. But in this phone it doesn’t work like that.
For once when you try to zoom it will give you desired zoom level like it should but when do it again, it won’t zoom in. Even after repeated attempts you wouldn’t be able to achieve the desired zoom.
When I was testing the phone, the zoom level was stuck at 3.03x and it almost led me to believe that it can’t go any further. I was surprised to see such a weird zoom level in a phone. It is usually 4x or 8x not 3x. I tried for a few minutes and then suddenly it went up to 4x.
So, you cannot rely on the zooming capabilities of phone.
I hope that this explanation will clear your doubts.

  • Vinay says:

    SIR,
I Have Ordered XOLO A500S IPS but in my friends phone the pinch to zoom is not working at images and videos in many ips models .so is there any solution sir

    • Anand Karwa says:

Well, if the company hasn’t provided the functionality then nothing can be done about it. Image zooming shouldn’t be an issue and for zooming in to videos use MXPlayer.

I’m having a Xolo A500ips model and It doesn’t have a camera shutter sound option. will it work if i take it to a xolo care? or can you recommend an app so that i could turn it off.

    • Sanand Karwa says:

      Hi,
Usually, you cannot alter system properties with just an app. However, you can always try some other camera apps(such as Google Camera) from Google Play Store. You might end up liking it more than the stock camera app!

My xolo a500s is working good but it has a problem that it switch off automatically twice a day.can you please suggest me why it happens

    • Anand Karwa says:

      Hi Navneet,
It might happen due to many reasons. It might even be due a poorly written third party app that you installed.
Try uninstalling the recently installed apps after which you have started facing these issues. If all else fails, then backup your phone to your computer and perform a full system reset.
