Opus comes with great looks and a low resolution display. The phone has got some amazing features with 1GB RAM & 5MP camera but it lacks at some points.
The phone targets the “Phones below INR 10,000 window” but is it the best under 10k? Will this phone win heart? Check out the complete Xolo Q1000 Opus Review below.

Pros and Cons
What does the Retail Package come with?
- The Handset, Battery, screen guard.
- USB Cable, charger, Headphones.
- Manual, Warranty Card.
Xolo Q1000 Opus gets the similar design which built up Samsung’s Galaxy Series. The chrome plated bezel running at the sides reminds you of the eroded bezel you’ve seen in your Galaxy devices (if you have used any).
First Impression: Large, Plastic-made, Galaxy like Design.
The phone is large in size to be operated comfortably with a single hand. The front shows 3 capacitive buttons below the screen that did not lag during the course of testing. Above the screen, you can see secondary cam, proximity sensor & earpiece.
Back Panel: Flimsy plastic, glossy, foldable.
The phone is large but fits in your jeans pocket easily. Overall, the design is 95% similar to the sibling Xolo 1000.
ii. User Interface:
Opus runs Android 4.2.2 JellyBean under its hood. Xolo doesn’t offer any UI customisation or a custom skin over the vanilla Android. But this shouldn’t be the negative point for the device as you can use always download some launchers from the Market.
Q1000 Opus sports a 5 inch FWVGA IPS display giving pixel density as low as 196ppi. The IPS display will hide the low density problem upto some extent. But at some point you will feel the pinch of the missing ppi.
The IPS touch gives great colours on the screen. Brightness could be set to auto-mode which will help you to adjust the screen brightness according to your surrounding lights.
Single handed reach- Impossible
Single Handed: Typing in single handed portrait mode is easy & lesser prone to mistakes due to adequate height of the keys.
Dual Handed: Typing in dual-handed landscape mode is a little clumsy due to improper height of the keys.
Auto correction is very good & can save you from making mistakes.
Auto-correction: Very Good
The browsing is smooth on this phone. The double tap to zoom, pinch-to-zoom and scrolling is smooth as expected. The webpages also get rendered very quickly which makes for a very good browsing experience.
Pre-installed browsers: Android Browser
Audio level of the phone is good to be audible at semi-crowded places. The sound restores clarity even at max volume. It has stock music player with regular features like shuffle, repeat, equaliser, etc.
When connected to internet, the player automatically downloads & displays the lyrics of the songs being played on the player skin itself.
The speakers are located on the bottom back side of the phone. This could create some hindrance when kept on bed/sofa.

Xolo Q1000 Opus has 5MP rear camera with BSI sensor. It has auto-focus, LED flash & 4x zoom. The front has a VGA camera. The rear camera is capable of recording HD videos.
Camera gets a very nice UI with settings available on dragging the finger on the screen. This is something unique from Xolo but it has some shortcomings. It interferes with the functionality when you swipe the screen to see last taken pictures. It is sometimes irritating, but nice move by Xolo.
The 5MP shooter takes average pictures for a scenery shoot. Zooming in more than 2x is not worth. Colours are not over saturated.
Macro Shots at distance of 3 cm- AMAZING
The best part of the Opus rear camera is its MACRO shots. With adequate light this phone can shoot macro shots having object at the distance of 3 centimetres. You can click great shots at this focus point. Having dull lights can affect the distance.
Night shots are very grainy & panorama shot is useless. LED flash with the rear camera takes good indoor pictures. HDR mode is absent.
Front camera- not for Selfies
Front camera is used for shooting grains. Just kidding! The VGA camera shoots pathetic (& grainy) images. Indoor shots for selfies is not at all recommended.
Rear camera can shoot 720p videos at 30fps. It misses the focussing feature. Overall the camera could be called as an average performer.
The camera gave problem once while shooting pictures. I couldn’t see anything on the screen.
Might this be a bug?
|Camera start-up time||~2sec|
|Shot to shot time||~3sec|
Xolo Q1000 Opus holds a 1.2 GHz Quad Core Cortex A7 Broadcom BCM23550 processor coupled with 1GB RAM. It has 4GB internal storage out of which approx. 2.7GB is available for the user.
The hardware under the hood isn’t very good for high multi-tasking. It will support multi-tasking upto your daily used apps but don’t expect it to run high end games smoothly.
Playing Temple Run Oz could make the slow rendering of the game visible.
Here are some timing benchmarks which might come in handy:
Approx. Time (sec)
Pre-installed Apps & Games
Useful Apps: Browser, Facebook, Torch, Xolo Power
Extra Apps: Xolo Care, Xolo Secure.
Games like Temple Run Oz did not lag at all but the rendering of blocks visible on the screen made the experience bitter
- 2G, 3G
- Dual SIM
- Wi-Fi with hotspot
- USB 2.0
- FM Radio
- Wi-Fi Direct
Opus has 2000mAh Li-Po battery which can last upto one day of normal usage. But it has a big problem with keeping the phone as hot as a cup of tea. While playing games, watching movies or a long voice call; the back of the phone gets heated quickly.
Final VerdictNot The Best
Xolo Q1000 Opus is definitely not the best smartphone available in the market below the mark of INR 10,000. It has average camera but good macro shots & camera UI. Music play, Video play, audio levels are average.
The display is adequate at size but very low on resolution. The heating of the phones tells me not to burn the pockets.
Xolo Q1000 Opus not recommended.
Recommended: Best Phones under Rs. 10,000.
