Microsoft recently launched Nokia Lumia 730, 830 and 930 together in Mumbai. They have got some amazing features and competitive prices. We had started with Lumia 730 recently. Now it’s time to check the Nokia Lumia 830 review.
Nokia Lumia 830 comes with 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor coupled with 1GB RAM. On the sheets, 1GB looks very less when Android offers 2GB within the price of Rs. 9,000. But, then it all depends upon the OS/platform.
830 has a beautiful 10MP camera whereas the 5” CBD IPS screen adds to its pros. The phone comes with the latest Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Denim
The phone started with the opening price of Rs. 28,799. The price seems to be a burden over the specs; so let’s see if the phone stands as promised.
Our PromiseWe review phones with an obsessive focus on the experience that really matters to you. We don’t care about specifications, we will tell you what you will really feel while using the phone. And needless to say, we maintain total integrity and truthfulness in our reviews.
Pros and Cons
What does the Retail Package come with?
- The Handset, Battery.
- USB Cable, charger, Headphones.
- Quick Guide
As usual, Nokia has been taking care of sturdiness of the phones that it comes out with. Lumia 830 is again one of those tough guys from Nokia.
The design is much different than the standard Nokia Lumia phones. They got the design from the very rarely heard Lumia 925.
First Impression: Rich Looks.
The usual Lumia got the bezels covered by the back panel. But that’s not the case with 830. The bezel is sharp and gets a metallic finish, although plastic.
Sides: Silver matte finish. Makes Beauty
The back panel now gets flimsy instead of sturdy in the previous devices. And the camera bezel is a widened circle.
Back panel: Plastic, Flimsy
The SIM slot was indistinguishable at first as its located at a very small corner above the battery. Best part of the phone is that it gets the dedicated Camera button with half-click to focus.
Big Camera bezel & the sides which makes it different from the family.
ii. User Interface:
Nokia Lumia 830 runs Windows Phone 8.1 OS out of the box with Lumia Denim. This OS update reduces the differences in some interesting features in rivals- Android & iOS.
During our testing, we faced a problem of taking Screenshots. We couldn’t solve the problem even after restarting the phone. Finally, after Resetting the phone, the problem got solved. On investigating, we found that this is a bug with Windows 8.Check the image below-
iii. Display: Adds to Beauty
Nokia Lumia 830 gets a beautiful 5” ClearBlack Display IPS screen. It has a resolution of 1280×720 pixels to give the density of 293.72 ppi.
The colours and brightness on the screen is perfect. The display is very sharp and adds beauty to view any picture of a clip on the phone.
Single handed reach: Difficult
Single Handed: Single handed typing in Portrait mode is good due to the Swipe feature introduced to Windows Phone 8.1.
Dual Handed: Landscape mode typing should have longer keys and the height of suggestions bar reduced.
Interestingly, you get emojis in the suggestions bar (See Screenshot)
Browsing experience in Nokia Lumia 830 is good due to the crispness in the screen. It has inprivate tab feature available along with its default IE browser.
Scrolling, pinch-to-zoom & double tap zoom worked fine with the default browser.
Pre-installed browsers: IE
The music experience with the phone is amazing. The loudspeakers are very loud and the audio quality is preserved at 100% volume.
The speaker is located on the bottom back side of the phone. It supports all the below listed audio formats, whereas the wma format is converted in other formats to make it supported file type.
- mp3- Yes
- aac- Yes
- wma- Yes
- wav- Yes
Lumia 830 plays up to 1080p videos. The video experience in beautiful display adds the best experience to movie watching. Unfortunately, it does not support flv & mkv formats.
Formats supported (480p):
- mp4- Yes
- flv- No
- avi- Yes
- mkv- No
Resolution Supported (mp4):
- 480p (SD)- Yes
- 720p (HD)- Yes
- 1080p (full-HD)- Yes
- 4K (Ultra HD)- No
A 10MP camera from Nokia (Microsoft) will never ever disappoint you. The primary camera has a LED flash with AF, 4x zoom and OIS.
The images clicked by the front camera are rich in colors and pretty sharp on the HD screen. Lumia 830 gets the standard Lumia camera apps out of the box.
The flash works great in low light, giving the object full light effect. 4x zoom is good up to 2x; beyond that it starts pixelating the image.
The front is only 0.9MP camera but it is adequate for clicking selfies with your friends at moderate lighting conditions.
Hardware Performance: Average
This Lumia gets the Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.2GHz quad-core processor and 1GB RAM. Yes, the 1GB RAM is pretty low on paper. At this price point, you may find many manufacturers offering 3GB RAM.
It has internal memory of up to 16GB of internal memory and expandable up to 128GB. In spite of being high on price, the phone did not impress us with its performance.
We saw occasional lags in the phone. The UI was not as fluid as expected. Auto-rotation would give 2-3 seconds of delay (see screenshots above).
- Single SIM
- 2G, 3G
- FM Radio
- Dual SIM
- USB OTG
Lumia 830 with a 2200 mAh Li-on Battery, is adequate for a complete day running.
Final VerdictHeavy on Budget
At the price of Rs. 28,799; Nokia Lumia 830 offers a brilliant looking phone having a great display and design. The camera is one of the best you can find in this price bracket.
Being so expensive, we expect the phone to throw a good performance; which it did not. Having 1GB RAM makes its operations dull.
This phone is expected to face tough time in the market to compete against those cheaper Android phones. Even if you are a Windows fan, I would advice to go for Lumia 730.
